The Bookish Girl

Welcome to my new world

Ah, see, it’s not really new. In fact, I purchased this URL a long time ago. It sat for awhile. I designed a new site. I waited to tweak it. I’m on WordPress now and it a whole different coding challenge for me. I had it just about ready and then, I decided to upgrade my WordPress software. So, it’s not ready but really – at this point, it never will be. Welcome to my new world….not really ready, but never will be. In the best possible way, of course.

As I mentioned in my last post I loved hearing from you all. I know you’re all out there but it’s nice to hear the choir of support and love. Mwah.

There were tons of questions in the comments and I’d like to take this homecoming opportunity to us them as a spring board for – the virgin post.

Norma asked – Is Daryl going to have a Brother Daryl, and Another Brother Daryl? Now, for those of you who are not American or are younger than oh, say 30, you may not know where this comes from – the show Newhart. This is exactly what I said to Rob when he started calling the kid Daryl. Since then the child has been referred to as: Apple (Fiona) and Jack (Lemmon). Each of these were brought on by the baby book descriptions comparing the size of your child to an Apple and a Lemon. We’re hilarious I tell you.

Rebecca mentioned that she couldn’t wait to see the baby’s library. A bookish baby this will be however, the library grows slowly. We have been waiting to purchase items because we are fortunate to have so many around us who are willing to share the booky love. Baby’s first books were from my friend Jess. They are from the “Baby be of Use” series and they, seriously, made me pee my pants I laughed so hard.

Baby be of Use

Baby be of Use, back

I was in a local discount store this past weekend and I found this book

The Monster at the end of this Book

This is a reprint of a favorite of mine. One that I had totally forgotten about until I saw it. Ah, to be young again and easily amused by Grover.

That’s the end of the baby library…it will improve vastly over the next few months.

My favorite Cynthia (who is now a Boston girl, go give her some love) asked, whatcha gonna knit for him/her? At this point we have a single bootie. Then I got bored and moved on.

Bootie

Rumor has it babies have two feet. I suppose I’ll have to knit another for it to be functional. I am holding off all other knits until the sex of the child has been confirmed. Our appointment is in 4 weeks – if all goes well knitting will commence then.

Fannie Pie mentions that, “There are some wonderful baby books with knitting in them when you’re ready for the bookish baby bedtime stories!” Susan, bring them on! But, if they have boring grandma knitting a boring afghan we should probably just leave them in the library. Or burn them or something. Ekkk!

Lorrette wants to know if we’re reading to the baby yet. We are not, but we have big plans. Rob has lists of music to play for the baby and has decided that he will read, On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Rob is a big Kerouac Fan and reads this every fall. I imagine this will commence as soon as we find the damn box the damn book is in. I am so tired of books being in boxes. I miss them. Wahh.

So I have a question? Could all of you knitting doctors get together and travel on over here to advise, deliver, and medicate me? Too much to ask?

Dear Allision is a bit nervous about her drinking water. “…But I am getting a little scared. One by one, I’m watching women around me get pregnant (well not watching them get pregnant but you know what I mean). Is there something in the water? Here’s hoping my Brita filters it out.”

Here’s a story for you Allision. I live in a three family house. Each floor is owned as a condo. We own the second floor. Our neighbors upstairs moved in shortly before us, the neighbors below us about 8 months after us. Rob and I were unmarried when we bought (I bought), J and G the couple upstairs were unmarried when they bought (she bought), and E and W downstairs were unmarried when they bought (together). We are all about the same age, education, etc. A very strange thing that we all came here under the same circumstances. Then the weird stuff started to happen. Rob and I were engaged the day we closed. J and G were engaged about 3 months later. E and W were engaged about six months after they moved in. Weird. Marriages were celebrated. We found out last summer J and G were pregnant. A bit of a surprise for them. They gave birth on Feb 21st 2006, which as I remember was little E’s due date. Does that day sound familiar? My due date is Feb 22nd, 2007. Dude, not only are/were J’s and my cycles synced but we also conceived at the same time one year later. WEIRD. When we told everyone here that we were pregnant we told E and W that they better double up this time next year – because, clearly, there is something in the water.

My reading has changed a bit.

mama books

Thanks to bookish Cathi for sending the bulk of these my way. I am a fairly pragmatic person and like to have all the information on hand so that I am empowered to make decisions that are good for me and my family. Each of these books brings something different to the table. I have favorites…but overall any information is good information in the sense that, even if you don’t agree with it, you come to realize why and how.

And that, I think is just about the end of this post. Most soon..if I can get my shit together.

You have some of my favorite pre-baby books there! Hip Mama is hysterical. Sears is an old stand by. Birthing from Within helped me through what almost became a very different birth from what I was planning. Hope all goes well!

Welcome to the new blog-home! I have to give my totally unsolicited advice and tell you, I HATED what to expect when you’re expecting. It made me feel guilty the whole pregnancy. But, The Thinking Woman’s Guide to A Better Birth is a must have that I don’t see in your pile… And, if you want to laugh, The Girlfriend’s Guide to Pregnancy is loads of fun!

Hey Wendy, I’m so happy for you.

if I may obnoxiously self-promote for a bit, I have a page that lists kids’ books that have knitting or fiber or sheep in them…

And, are you gonna put the new site into the Librarian/Knitter web ring? Please do!! I can help with the WordPress end of it if you need that.

Hey, congrats on your new home! I keep wondering if I’ll ever move. Considering that I haven’t even gotten my act together to put buttons on my blog, I’d say don’t hold your breath.

The coincidences are too scary. I’d definitely have your water checked. (The water in your building, I mean.)

Speaking of coincidences, my birthday is 2/23. It’s an excellent day. Just hang in there until after midnight on your due date, and Daryl can share it.

Love the new digs! Even if they’re not quite finished :) Just wanted to say that I was your first bloglines subscriber at your new home. I don’t know if that makes me special or anything, but I feel special. I also really want to figure out how I could get my future babies to make me breakfast. That would ROCK!

(the new web’digs are wonderful, and I hope you’re getting a chance to slowly unpack your books. I have a long list of my favorite childhood books and can’t wait to pass along a few titles… :)
