The Bookish Girl

A Hamburger or A Hot Dog?

The voting for the glasses is now over. The Chosen Pair has been paid for and ordered. I will be counting votes and producing graphs in the next few days. The winner from a cursory glance was frame #1…however, I did not purchase that frame. ;) Fickle. I know. I think you will all be pleasantly surprised with the final choice. Your opinions were a huge help, I was not even considering that frame as a contender! A winner of the random drawing will also be announced. I think, this time, I might try to get an idea of what the winner likes and sent something from the stash.

In other news…. I have started knitting for Baby Bookish. The first project is the Kai Cable Sweater from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms by Louisa Harding. Pictures of the pattern are here and here. There are some great versions out in blog land. A quick google search yielded: a stripey version modeled by a cute pooch, and one knit with the called for yarn,

I am using yarn that I picked up in Maine earlier this year at SPA Knit and Spin (sadly, I cannot attend the event next year…it is five days before BB’s due date!). I wish I could remember the vendor. It’s a undyed Merino two-ply. Very soft and very, very nice. I think my gauge is a bit tighter than the patterns (I NEVER gauge swatch for baby sweaters) which means that baby will be able to wear it straight away! A February baby needs some sweaters…and socks…and hats…

Why start knitting now? Well, we found out the sex of the baby! We had an 18 week ultrasound last Thursday. The doctor was awesome and we learned and saw so much. I’ll spare you an endless barrage of black and white photos and share my favorite…

babyssecondpicture4

You can see the heart here – and it really looks like the shape of a heart! Pretty cool.

According to the Doctor, we are having A GIRL! I am now especially terrified, as I am not a girly girl and am much more comfortable around boys. However, we are both thrilled beyond belief and this has started to convince me that there is a baby and that I am actually pregnant. It’s a crazy, crazy, world out there.

Now, I said “according to the doctor” for a reason. Rob and I saw a big blob. Apparently the Doctor saw a birds-eye view of the female anatomy. I asked her to point out the specifics of what she saw. And, as she did with the entire ultrasound, she obliged. However, to us there was still a grey blob. I spent some time with Kristen this weekend (which was a blast by the way, Stitchy kicked 17 kinds of ass), having recently finished her OB rotation she assured me that we can indeed “see” texture in the gray variations on the ultrasound screen. She also compared shape of the texture to that of a hamburger. “So, you have a hamburger and not a hot dog.” I found endless amusement in this analogy.

We have chosen a name, although it will be kept private for the duration. I also may or may not have spent a ridiculous amount of money on yarn at WEBS. Rob and I sat down and he, like a good doobie, helped pick out a few patterns for the wee one. This kid is going to be well appointed!

Congrats! I’m in the same boat with the scared to have a girl thing, as I too am not very girly girl, and well, I just “get” boys more easily. I’m starting to wrap my head around it though. I’ll have a few months jump on you, so will let you know how it is.

Yay! Congratulations on the girl! We had our last ultrasound a week ago (at 22 weeks) and the baby would not uncross it’s legs! Same thing happened at the first ultrasound, so we have to wait until it’s born to find out. The control freak in me is extrememly nervous about this! I feel the same as you…I’ll be happy with whatever it is, but I am not a girly-girl and I have always done better with boys, so I am a little anxious!

A girl!!!! Hooray! I’ve got one of each- and the first time, I wanted a girl so bad I could taste it. Um, wait, an analogy about tasting the baby is bad, right? Anyway! My girl came first followed by my boy. Girls are great and wonderful, and you don’t have to be a girly girl to have a girl. I swear. But, tiny little dresses are lots of fun! Congrats.

Yay, congrats! My sister is not very girly girl (though much more than me) and had a girl. Raised her pretty tomboy and rough and tumble but my niece was determined to have her pink, shiny, frilly things AND be rough and tumble! She’s moved on to purples, and now it’s gotta be blue and she doesn’t like frou frou. I don’t know my point, besides, well, she’ll be what she’ll be, and that will probably change. :)

Congratulations!!! I’d be nervous about the sex thing too, but the ultrasound looks so clear, and I’m sure they know what they’re talking about =)

And don’t be nervous about raising a girl. Not all girls need to be girly girls to be raised well =)

You got the glasses with the nose and mustache attached, didn’t you? ; )

I suspect that you’ll adapt to whatever kind of girl you get! You might find out that you don’t mind high heels and boas once in a while. You’ll find out all sort of things!! ; )

Hurrah! A coworker of mine just said something similar to me last week — “I realized, I’m going to have to teach her how to be a girl!” Funny thing is, it all works out fine. You are so funny, I’m sure your girl’s going to have a great sense of humor.

Nick’s Farm merino, I’m betting….same stuff with which you were learning to spin. Speaking of learning to spin at SPA, you should totally plan to kick her out of that womb about two weeks early so that you can bring her with you. We can just carry her around under our shirts like Chris did her baby bunny.

Ooh, a girl, what fun! My best friend was convinced that ours was a boy… even after the ultrasound, but it really is more than presence or absence of a “hot dog”!

How go the moving plans? Stick around and our little girls can play together!

You’ll raise a really cool girl! Word of warning: my friend Pam was told she was having a girl, they picked out a name, all the shower gifts were girly, and you can guess the rest. She had a lot of shower gifts to return… but a beautiful baby boy.

Speaking as the not-at-all-girly mom of a much girlier daughter, I can honestly say: it will all work out. She will not be scarred for life if you dress her in blue until she’s old enough to express her own opinion. You will not be scarred for life if at that point she insists on nothing but pink hearts. Just, whatever you do, memorize these words: “Do you want to wear this outfit or that one?” If you allow her to consider all 19 million outfits in her closet, you will never get out of the house (or, if trying to be smart and pick out the clothes the night before, you will never get to bed).

Oh, and don’t dress her (or him, should the Doctor be wrong after all) in white. Chocolate, mustard and ketchup are magnetically attracted to white.

    a hamburger, hu?
well done! as for girlish girls, why would you expect that your daughter would want to be one? with such a cool mom like you, she’ll want to be just like you.

Personally, I do sometime wish that Maddalena did not always look like a street urchin from the Gorbals, but then I cringe at the thought of the potential frilliness, and i am glad she is like she is (most of the time, anyway!)

Yay for baby girls in February! My daughter will be 3 on 2/15. I’m not so girlie either but my daughter is. I have 3 sons; 14, 11 and 8 years old and then my girl. What a welcome change of pace. I love having a daughter. Although she is very girlie she does have a touch of “tomboy” in her. Her first words were “touch-down!” and she loves baseball. She also loves her Dolly and her books (she sleeps with 4 or 5 books every night……you know, just in case). She wears pink dresses and pig-tails and carries a football around the neighborhood. She likes her princess purse and puts her Hot Wheels cars in it……..

Congratulations on having a wee girl! Don’t worry – she’s just as likely to be a complete tomboy as a froufrou girly type. And if she does love frilly dresses and pink, well, you’ll have much more interesting knitting to do :-)

Yay, a girl! It’s amazing how much the ultrasound makes the pregnancy so much more real, even though I didn’t find out the gender for my little sweetie. I’m so happy for you! Don’t worry about not being a girly girl. No matter what, you’re exactly the right mama for this baby. :)

Congrats on the good news that baby’s doing well! I’m fearing hearing “girl” too, because I’m am not a girly girl and can’t stand all that pink crap in the stores for girls. But knitting for a girl will be great! Perhaps we can plan non-girly girl knits together next week after my ultrasound. :)

Congrats! I had a baby girl 7 weeks ago – I spent all 40 weeks of pregnancy convinced the baby was a boy. I was pretty worried about dealing with mother-daughter stuff. Now, I can’t imagine having a boy. You’ll have so much fun. Good luck and know that virtually everything you knit in newborn size will be too big!
