The Bookish Girl

Kansas

We had a great weekend. It was filled with one very strong realization. Toto, we’re not in Boston anymore.

Saturday afternoon Robby and I wanted to head out of the house. Our desire was to walk a neighborhood street, window shop, possibly stop for a drink or dinner. In Boston we would have headed to Jamaica Plain, or Coolidge Corner, or Newbury Street, or The North End, or, or, or…the possibilities were endless. Here we had to really think about where to go and what to do. In the end we decided to head out to the village of a local town (many suburban town centers outside of Rochester are old, historic and quaint due to the Erie Canal and the economy that surrounded the transportation of goods). This evening was not exactly “happening” at the level that we’re used to. We had covered all ground within an hour. But we did have a lovely dinner at a crepe restaurant. Hmmm Crepes. And headed off to ice cream at Abbott’s afterward. I love me some Abbott’s. It’s terribly fabulous frozen custard. There really is nothing like it.

On Sunday we took Sophia on her first trip to Wegman’s. Anyone familiar with and/or from Upstate NY is feeling the pain of envy right now. Wegman’s is a grocery store on crack. It is a fabulous place filled with great food, incredible produce and a helpful staff. Nothing like the grocery stores in Boston or anywhere else I have lived. Tour buses actually make a stop at this place…that’s how cool it is.

Oh, I have such fond memories of Wegman’s. It was the only thing that sustained me through three long years in Syracuse.

Yay!! We move in just a couple weeks now. I can’t wait to spend some more quality time at Abbott’s – soooo yummy.

I’m thinking that we’ll have much the same reaction coming from Seattle, a very neighborhoody, urban environment. Definitely an adjustment.

It will take getting used to, this new lifestyle. But I know you guys. You’re very adaptable and manage to find fun wherever you are. You’ll be just fine.

Ahhh, Wegmans. Hubbo spent a few weeks in Corning over the past few years, and he loves to torment me with tales of the greatness that is Wegmans.

I’ve been to that Wegmans! BF went to RIT, but I digress…. losing Wegmans has been one of the hardest thing for me to get over with our move to VT. I place Wegmans orders whenever my Mom is comming up. Their basting oil is to DIE for and I’ve never found anything like it!! anyway. I’m shedding a tear for my loss of wegmans ;(

I’ve never been to a Wegman’s, but I noticed Sophia’s little drool spot on your pouch! Robby gets the same thing, he likes to munch on the edge of the sling and by the end of our walks, there is a drool spot as big as my hand on the sling :) I’m glad you guys got through the moving and are settling in! We are on the other side as well, and it is SO much better than it was a few weeks ago!

That picture is just too cute!

my best friend went to UR and my sis goes to Cornell — they both talk up Wegmans like crazy. :)

We have a handful of Wegmans down here in the DC area now! They’ve expanded into PA, NJ, MD, and VA. :)

How many more times can I leave this comment, “wow, I’ve been there!” But, man, I’ve been there, with a night out and nothing groovy to do.

Oh yes, as soon as I saw that photo, I got a serious pang of envy. I grew up in the Southern Tier/Finger Lakes area, so I’m very familiar with the glory of Wegmans. So jealous.

I’m glad you and your fam are now safe and sound in Rochester. Moving, even when it goes well, sucks the big one. It’s never fun, even when it’s self-instigated. I’ve moved too many times to count and have to move again this summer which I am not fondly anticipating. All that to say I’m glad you are finding joy in some little things about your new/old home town :)

Welcome back to Rochester; glad to have you here! We took the kids to Seabreeze (local amusement park) on Monday, had lunch at Bill Gray’s, and Abbott’s for dessert. Yum. I love Wegman’s (anyone who visits us must make the pilgrimmage there) and Abbott’s, but I have to say that the burger joints here are excellent. Bill Gray’s is my favorite. When she gets a wee bit older, take Sophia to the Strong Museum–it’s phenomenal!

Ah the transition back to one’s (smaller) hometown. It will be worth it if for nothing else than the Wegmans and the Abbotts, because you’ll go to those at least once a week!! :)

I do hope we can visit Rochester again sometime and meet you face to face. Our friends live on a farm in Avon, which has one of those cute little old towns you described…

Since the children have pretty much grown and gone (most of the time) and the hubby works until late on weekdays, cooking in this house is minimal at best. The prepared food aisle of Wegman’s here in PA is the source of the vast majority of my meals. I am in there 3 times a week at least, and they are the best!

When our Wegman’s finally opened here in Fairfax, VA it caused such a traffic jam that continued for days!! Now, during the holidays you have to be in the “know” as when to go to make sure you can find parking.

Delurking to say welcome back to Rochester. Lived there for the first 33 years of my life then made the grand move down the thruway to Syracuse. Thank goodness that Wegmans is here also! I miss Abbott’s and always take my boys to get a dish when visiting relatives. Make sure you have a Zweigles hot for me!

I heart Wegmans – I get to go every week and I love it there. Our impending move to Michigan is tinged with sadness as we know there will be no Wegmans and nothing like it there. I will take solace in your shopping excursions to that great mecca of grocery stores. Grab some sushi or steak or one of those fantastic looking desserts.
