The Bookish Girl

Oh Strawberry Shortcake…

…what have they done to you?

Strawberry Shortcake was having an identity crisis. The “it” doll and cartoon star of the 1980s was just not connecting with modern girls. Too candy-obsessed. Too ditzy. Too fond of wearing bloomers.

“Beloved Characters as Reimagined for the 21st Century”

Too fond of wearing bloomers? I mean common, don’t mock the bloomer.

A “fruit-forward” makeover?!

Puleeze.

Yeah. Kids hate candy. Oh, and dija see?– the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are apparently being re-envisioned with less attitude. Because, y’know, kids these days are all about being humble.
    Yeah.

Rickdickulous. Besides, candy-obsessed? As far as I remember, it was all about yummy baked goods. Which I am all about.

All of a sudden, I want to wear bloomers…

But, at least you guys have the American Girl Franchise, which keeps little girls playing with dollies for rather longer than girls in the UK play with dollies. One of the nice things about my March trip to the US was seeing little girls proudly holding onto their dolls, and going to the store. You do not see little girls, unless they’re still in pushchairs, with dolls in the UK. And that’s sad.

    Totally off the topic, too.

Ew. Are they slowly morphing her into a Bratz doll? This is a disturbing trend.

I loved Strawberry Shortcake and her friends growing up. I hate how they are turning everything into a 21st century tie-in. Really, why should she be talking on her cellphone? She shouldn’t even have one. For me it’s getting beyond ridiculous. Supposedly they’re making a Smurf movie – I guess we’ll see how much they butcher that too.

aack. what the hell does ‘fruit-forward’ actually mean? can not get my head around this:: how marketing departments and production companies are twisting kids’ minds. I feel like such an old fart.
