No trip re-cap today.  Just a…

*Sigh*

Rob was laid off this morning.  We knew it was coming - but did not know when.  It is, ultimately, a blessing in disguise (as these things often are).  But for now we are just a bit sad that the plans you make do not always go the way you need and or want them to.  We are bracing ourselves for our financial near future and keeping our toes crossed.

A talented and smart fellow he is and someday he will find his life’s work and be content.

This I know.

  1. I’m sorry. I know this is a hard thing to go through and I’ll be thinking about you guys.

  2. Oh my dear, I’m sorry. Ya know, it just shouldn’t have to be this hard for a man to work — to find work and make a living doing the thing he does best, the thing he loves, the thing he’s meant to do. This is one of the biggest frustrations and sadnesses in my life — as a woman, wife, and mother.

Love love love to you all. We’re all pretty damn rich in that. I only wish it could pay the bills.

  3. Damn…so sorry and I’m afraid many of us may be heading down the same path.

  4. I’m sorry. In the words of my favorite Mother Superior “God never closes a door without opening a window…”

Here’s to Rob finding the right window to climb through. :)

  5. Stephanie says:

Hugs to you and wishes for the blessing in disguise to appear soon!

  6. So sorry to hear that! You all will be in my thoughts & prayers.

Oh, and now I have “Climb Every Mountain” going through my head — thanks a lot, Jackie!

  7. thinking of you and your family during this time. hang in there…

  8. I’m sorry. Give a shout if I can help in any way.

  9. Sheesh. Sorry to hear about the lay off… hopefully some severance and unemployment will help with some of the financial strain. Sending good thoughts to you and yours!

  10. oh man, i’m sorry. I’M SORRY ROB!! that just sucks.

what also sucks is having the entire sound of music soundtrack running through my head for the rest of the afternoon.

what do you do with a problem like maria, indeed.

good thing i love that movie.

  11. I’m sorry. Issues with career are all too familiar to me, and I can appreciate needing to love what you do and trying until you find it. I’m convinced it can sometimes take a lifetime.

And know what? Summer is the best time to get laid off (if there is a good time…). Companies still have money in their busgets to rehire. Crossing my fingers, toes, and eyes for you all.

  12. I’m hoping that a blessing NOT in disguise appears soon.

  13. I’m sorry, my dear. It isn’t easy, even if you knew it was coming. And I hate those blessings in disguise. They need to just unmask already.

And do we all have to go watch the “Maria” movie now? I’ve got the sound of whatever stuck in my head, too.

  14. Oh dear. Fingers crossed for good things around next, immediate, corner…..

  15. Ugggg!

  16. That sucks - I’m so sorry! We’re keeping fingers & toes crossed for something awesome to come over the horizon very soon.

  17. Cripes. I’m going to go for the slightly silver lining and say I’m glad this happened just AFTER you made your little weekend trip away, because you NEEDED IT, and if this had happened before the trip, you wouldn’t have gone.

Fingers and toes crossed for the good open window.

  18. Aw, crap. I’m sorry.

Sending many good wishes for the right window to open for him, and soon.

  19. Ack, Wendy, I’m so sorry for you and Rob. May the blessing become apparent soon. I might not be able to help pay bills, but I can share garden abundance this summer! Let me know if you’d be interested in a tomato or broccoli plant! I have extra just waiting to be planted.

  20. Oh dude. That sucks.
I seriously hope that this is one of those layoffs that is the payoff to a bigger thing and a life path.
(We’re still waiting for Joe’s life path to reveal itself after our disaster. You gotta stay loose, apparently. You know my number.)

  21. Having heard a little of the grief they were giving him at work, I say they didn’t deserve to have him. Or maybe anyone worthwhile. I really appreciated Vick’s cri de coeur above. We don’t need no steenkeen jobs! We had dem steenkeen jobs.

I’ve been looking for, what, ten months or longer? Looking back, I explored many options, reflected on where I’ve been, learned new things and new ways to job hunt. And I’ve restored my hope in living like the prime mover of my work/career/life. And most of the time, I was sure I was lost.

Rob. You’re in a different job market that Boston, but if you want to compare notes, talk strategy, have a virtual beer, I’m on tap.

  22. Ouch. Good luck on finding a newer (and better) job!

  23. Oh poop.

  24. Aw. :( May the dream job show up gift-wrapped tomorrow.

  25. been there, done that. And it blows. It really does. We’re waiting for the axes to fall around here too— it makes life very hard.

I am sure he’ll find something, he seems smart enough ( I mean he married you and S is the world’s smartest baby, no?).

I’m with Jackie: find that window!

  26. Too many people are in this situation now–it’s awful!

    Good luck to you guys.

  27. Even when you know it’s coming, getting laid off is never easy, and there’s really only so much you can do to prepare yourself emotionally.

Give each other a hug for me, please.

    xoxo.

  28. Mary Ellen says:

Awww, that’s too bad. Actually, that sucks! I’m sure something much, much better will come along soon. In the meantime, he’ll get to spend extra time playing Mr. Mom.

  29. Aw, crap. Crossing my toes for the whole Bookish Fam.

  30. Take the time to really feel this. First time my hubby lost his job, he pretended it was okay and he buried a lot of crap that came out too late.

The second time (yikes) he handled it much better and things went better and faster.

From everything you’ve said about him, he sounds brilliant. Could he be a teacher? That profession is virtually recession-proof.

Best of luck to you both.

  31. Aw, rats! I hope he does, indeed, find a job that is more fun than work.

  32. That is rotten news. I hope Rob has very good luck and finds a super job very soon.

  33. So sorry to hear this. The job market should be pretty good around here. Hope you can still enjoy the summer. Might even be nice to be laid off for a bit if he can find something pretty soon.

When I was younger and lived in Canada in the days of super fantastic unemployment insurance and a reasonably good job market (I’m talking decades ago - a brief window), people practically lived for getting laid off, especially in the summer. This alas is no longer true.

    Good luck to you!

  34. Aw crap, so sorry to hear this. Scott and I were laid off a couple of years ago and can attest to the fact that, despite knowing it may come, it still feels like crap when it hits. On the plus side, it was the best thing for us and led to happier jobs.
